Researchers of a recent study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of a hypoallergenic SPF 50 sunscreen (Anthelios Gentle Lotion Kids Sunscreen, L’Oréal) for children with atopic dermatitis (AD) or AD-prone skin. The sunscreen, formulated with an antioxidant complex and nonallergenic ingredients, was tested on 45 children aged 3 to 12 years, with diverse skin types ranging from Fitzpatrick types I-III (n=26) to types IV-VI (n = 19). After four weeks of application, no participants experienced adverse effects such as erythema, dryness, peeling, or edema.
Parents highly rated the sunscreen’s performance, noting its even application, non-greasy feel, and lack of white cast, especially on children with darker skin tones. Most ratings for characteristics like smoothness and non-stickiness were 4 or 5 out of 5. The authors emphasized the importance of using gentle, effective sunscreens for children with sensitive skin to protect against UV radiation without irritating their condition. They concluded that incorporating sunscreen with antioxidant complexes into daily routines can support the well-being of children with AD, allowing them to engage in outdoor activities safely.
